ALBUM REVIEW:

MIDNIGHT SPIN - DON'T LET ME SLEEP

Alicia Ballard

Jan 31st 2013

The productive woe of a sleepless artist; this is what the New York five-piece’s debut album is all about. With lyrics written whilst wandering restlessly through the downtown streets of Manhattan that make up the American underground scene they’ve known so well since forming in 2008, how could the produce not be this catchy, provocative album of borderline mainstream?

Each track comes complete with the rough, melancholic whine of frontman, Mike Corbett, sometimes as reminiscent of Dave Grohl’s vocals as songs such as “Neuroin” are of the Foo Fighters. Yet, Midnight Spin boldly experiment with instruments no Foo ever dared, with track ‘Mission Beach’ swapping the crash symbol for the electric organ. In other tracks such as ‘Reagan Babies’ we are teased with a Gaslight Anthem air of vintage, before being torn from our classic rock comfort zone with light synth.

Midnight Spin creates a delectable mesh of sub-genre musical styling’s offering a wide appeal and an interesting tone custom-made to liven up our grey, little country. ‘Don’t Let Me Sleep’ just hails for a crowd of groupies to be waiting at the docks for when the band begin their transoceanic journey.
